‘Brilliant and razor-sharp’ proof coin could be worth $13,800 but you must inspect both sides carefully

Regardless, Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS) estimates that there are 60 proofs known – only adding to its value.

Back in January, the coin sold for $13,800 from Heritage Auctions due to its scarcity and high grade.

“This gem is brilliant and razor-sharp,” the auction site said.


The 1856 three-cent coin was given the grade PR65 Cameo, an extremely high grade.

Cameo coins have more of a frosted finish with mirror-like features.

Experts will determine the value based on a variety of factors including mintage, errors, demand, age, design, and condition.

Coins are assigned a whole number between 1 and 70, with 70 being a flawless coin.


Since coins can be worth much more than their original value, it may be beneficial to check your spare change for any rare pennies, nickels, dimes, and others.

Just type in the full coin name, select the “sold” listing, and then toggle the search to “highest value.”
