Fox’s “Family Guy” is awfully prescient for our current times. Take this segment. A woman sits at a bar watching pornography on a phone. The bartender interjects, “Excuse me, ma’am, no porn at the bar.” The apparent woman responds, “Oh it’s okay, I’m transgender.” The bartender exclaims, “Oh, I had no idea. Do whatever you want all the time.”
What a great summary of the West’s current attitude toward transgenderism. Because we’ve enshrined such subjective terms as “gender identity” and “gender expression” into law, whatever a trans person says, goes. In other words, the West is now in the position of protecting attitudes and expressions that are completely at odds with reality and pose a menace to society.
Take, for example, a high school shop teacher in Ontario, Canada, who started showing up to class wearing freakishly large prosthetic breasts. No doubt this individual derives some sick sexual satisfaction from subjecting high school students to his ridiculous appearance. And the Halton District School Board must now protect such “expression,” due to its embrace of Ontario’s Human Rights Code, which prohibits discrimination based on “gender identity” and “gender expression.”
In an email to parents surrounding the controversy, Oakville Trafalgar High School reiterated its commitment to promoting “a positive learning environment in schools consistent with the values of the HDSB and to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students, staff and the community, regardless of race, age, ability, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, cultural observance, socioeconomic circumstances or body type/size.” AKA, any concerns about a man wearing overly sexualized fake breasts in front of young teens is akin to discrimination and will be prosecuted as such.
Never mind that Oakville Trafalgar High School’s own guidelines state that dress codes “must prevent students from wearing clothing that exposes or makes visible genitals and nipples.” But trans shop teacher Kayla Lemieux can wear whatever he wants, i.e., tight shirts that reveal protruding fake nipples — also known as, sexual fetish gear or a public sex display.
But the law and the school board are on Lemieux’s side, not the children’s. And therein lies the rub. Back when Ontario’s Human Rights Law was amended to include gender identity and gender expression, legislators thought they were protecting a small number of people claiming to be the opposite sex. Instead, they unknowingly wrote grotesque sex displays into law.
That’s because the West, as author and theologian Carl R. Trueman notes, has — with no questions asked — accepted the implicit premise of trans ideology, which states that sexual feelings are the bedrock of personhood. To question Lemieux’s “sexual expression,” then, is to deny his personhood.
Such logic is the inevitable result of the identity crisis of the West. When people lack firm ground upon which to build an identity — religion, family, community — they turn to proxies to construct a sense of self. In the case of the trans community, it’s sex.
Until the West, as sociologist and professor Mark Regnerus writes, clothes itself “in the dignity of reality once more,” and admits that men cannot become women, sexual fetishes are sexual fetishes (and not “gender expressions”) we will continue to live in this dystopian hellscape.
