Did Hilary Duff have a water birth?

Hilary gave birth to both her daughters, Banks and Mae James Bair, in her LA home through a water birth.

In 2018, Hilary gave details about the birth of Banks eventually sharing the video of the at-home birth on social media.

After giving birth to Banks she explained the decision to have at-home water birth saying: “I thought to myself that I want to get the full experience of what it is to bring a baby into the world and how incredible our bodies are,” Duff added.

Hilary gave birth to her first child, Luca, at a hospital with an epidural but changed her mind thinking: “My body gave me this incredible little boy and now I get to have this little girl and I want to experience it to the fullest.”

After watching the documentary, The Business of Being Born, Hilary discussed the idea to have a “natural, drug-free home birth” with Matthew who was supportive of the idea.

For her first at home birth she had three midwives and an “amazing doula”.

According to the photos that she and Matthew have posted of her most recent delivery, it seems that they chose to do it again this time around giving birth to Mae James Bair in their home through water birth.

What is a water birth?

A water birth occurs as a woman experiences labor and delivery in a tub of warm water often in her own home.

Mothers who want a natural childbirth, without medication or epidurals, choose water birth because it can provide a more natural experience as they sometimes find that being submerged in water provides more comfort during contractions.

There are certain circumstances in which women should not choose water birth including: gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, macrosomia, intrauterine growth restriction, and prematurity.

When women get into the deep water of a birth pool there is a chemical and hormonal response that adjusts the level of the hormone oxytocin regulating the intensity of the contractions.

As the body becomes buoyant in the water more pain-inhibiting endorphins flood to the brain allowing her body to do the work that it needs to do naturally.

Water births are also known to reduce the severity of tearing.

How many kids does Hilary Duff have?

Hilary has three children, Luca, Violet Banks, and Mae James Bair.

Her first son Luca was born in 2012 with her first husband Mike Comrie.

Hilary and Mike split amicably and have continued to co-parent their son.

Luca turned 9 years old only 4 days before his youngest sister was born and Hilary was vocal about wanting her son to have his birthday to himself.

Violet Banks was her first born with current husband Matthew Koma, in 2018 and makes very recurring appearances on Hilary’s social media.

On March 26, Hilary hinted at the birth of her most recent child with a photo of her daughter Banks giving the camera some attitude captioned: “I’m a big sister ……. marinating on how I feel about that!”

The next day, Hilary confirmed the news by posting a photo of the expanding family on Instagram.
