The three young women initially went missing on April 4.

They were reportedly killed and left in the shallow grave on April 5, according to local media outlets.

Then, on April 7, fishermen contacted police to report a foul odor along the Esmeraldas River near Quininde.

Police said there was evidence showing that the women had been tortured.

According to Ecuadorean news outlet Vistazo, Tapia was a mother to a four-year-old daughter.

Tapia texted her sister at 11.10 pm on April 4 and included her location, the outlet reported.

“I’m just sending you just in case,” the final message read.

Tapia’s location was near where the three women were later found dead.

In addition, Vistazo also revealed a final text from Reyna, a student.

“I feel that something is going to happen and if something happens to me, remember that I love you very much,” the message to her friend read.

The women lived less than 50 miles from where their bodies were found.

“They were young, had beach clothes, bathing suits, light clothing, shorts,” Diego Velastegui with the Quininde Police told local media.

Police also found a cell phone by the grave, which they’re hoping will aid in the investigation.

There has been a state of emergency in Esmeraldas province – where the women were believed to have been killed and buried – since March 3.

The state of emergency was enacted because of crime and violence in the area as rival drug trafficking gangs continue to fight.
