Last season, the then-rookie Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft needed surgery and worked his way to rehab and recover to play in Week 1 of this season.

Purdy has gone on to lead the 49ers to a trip to Super Bowl LVIII this upcoming weekend.

Shanahan was interviewed by NBC Sports’ Peter King and he revealed that he thought of the idea of having Brady, who retired last February, to unretire to play for the 49ers.

The 44-year-old told Purdy that he’s the 49ers’ “guy long-term,” but that if the New England Patriots icon Brady wanted to play one more season in the NFL, the second-year quarterback would be the backup.

“I actually thought it was giving Brock the biggest compliment,” Shanahan said.

“I let him know he’s our guy long-term. … No question.

“And if Tom Brady wanted to come here and start for one year, that’s the only way you’re not starting when you’re healthy this year.”

“I wanted to assure him, ‘Don’t worry. You’re our guy. But how cool would it be if Tom Brady would be the quarterback here for one season? How cool would it be for you to learn from him?'”

Shanahan did admit that the Brady backup plan “wouldn’t have been a consideration at all” if Purdy didn’t suffer the brutal injury.

“I’d never have brought it up. But I’ve got to think about the team,” Shanahan said.

Purdy would end up being the starting quarterback in Week 1 and helped guide the team to a 30-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And the rest would be history with the Iowa State product throwing 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the regular season.

The 49ers achieved the No. 1 seed and finished with a 12-5 record and will face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Brady is set to be a lead NFL analyst on Fox’s broadcasts beginning in September in the 2024 season.
