Revelation 5:1-10
To understand what John was shown in the Revelation we must know what God
purposed before the world was. James tell us “Known unto God are all his works
from the beginning of the world.” Acts 15:18 Everything that happens is according
to His Divine plan. God Himself said “Remember the former things of old: for I am
God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end
from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying,
My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:” Isaiah 46:9-10
The one true God who is and always has been is both creator and controller of the
universe and all that transpires. Paul said “In whom also we have obtained an
inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all
things after the counsel of his own will:” Ephesians 1:11 David said “But our God
is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” Psalm 115:3
God does what He pleases at all times and no man has the right to question His acts.
Nebuchadnezzar learned this and said “And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar
lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I
blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose
dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to
generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth
according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth:
and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” Daniel 4:34-35
David tells us “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed
the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” Psalm
90:2 God determined what was to be and set in motion the carrying out of His great
purpose. In His own time and way He orders the affairs of man and how His plan
is to unfold.
When Adam fell God had already decreed how lost men would be brought back into
a relationship with Himself. He determined to send His Son into the world to
defeat the forces of evil and restore all things. He said to the serpent “And I will
put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall
bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15 He inspired holy men
to receive and record His plan in what we call the Holy Bible. Peter said “For the
prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they
were moved by the Holy Ghost.” I Peter 1:21
The Bible is God’s word to man that he might know what God has planned and how
it is being carried out. He does not reveal everything, but only that which is needed.
Moses said “The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things
which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all
the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29

To carry out that which He had purposed God chose a people through whom the
promise would be fulfilled. He said to Israel “The LORD did not set his love upon
you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were
the fewest of all people: But because the LORD loved you, and because he would
keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you
out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the
hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 7:7-8
It was to be through this nation that Messiah would come. God miraculously
protected and preserved this nation until Jesus was born according to His revelation.
Judah was the tribe through whom the Messiah was to come as predicted by Jacob
when he said “Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he
stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until
Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” Genesis 49:9-10

In the days of Daniel, approximately six hundred years before Jesus was born, in a
dream, God revealed to Daniel what He had planned. Daniel said “And whiles I
was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,
and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of
my God; Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had
seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the
time of the evening oblation. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O
Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. At the beginning
of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for
thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the
transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity,
and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going
forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the
Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built
again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks
shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall
come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a
flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm
the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause
the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations
he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall
be poured upon the desolate.” Daniel 9:20-27
Everything shown to Daniel was to be fulfilled on God’s time line. But the Lord
said to Daniel “But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to
the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”
Daniel 12:4 God said that the things shown to Daniel would be sealed up until the
time of the end. Counting from the going forth of the decree issued by Artaxerxes
in 444 B. C. until Jesus was baptized by John in the river Jordan the first sixty nine
weeks of Daniel’s seventy weeks transpired. The last or seventh week began with
Jesus’ baptism and ended when Philip went to Samara with the gospel.

Paul said “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made
of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we
might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath
sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” Galatians
4:4-6 The fulness of time refers to that time line given to Daniel. Everything that
had been prophesied focused on the coming of Jesus. Jesus made this clear to the
unbelieving Jews when He said “But I have greater witness than that of John: for
the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear
witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself, which hath sent
me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen
his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye
believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they
are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”
John 5:36-40

Jesus understood His mission for He said “I must work the works of him that sent
me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9:4 Included
in the works assigned Him was the fulfillment of that which God showed to Daniel
but commanded him to seal until the time of the end. According to the writer to the
Hebrews Jesus was revealed in the last days, he said “God, who at sundry times
and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in
these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things,
by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the
express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when
he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on
high; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained
a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:1-4

The writer to the Hebrews “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with
hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the
presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest
entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often
have suffered since the foundation of the world : but now once in the end of the
world (age) hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” Hebrews
9:24-26 Jesus died in the end of the Old Covenant age of Judaism.
As a whole the nation of Israel rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah and for this
she was rejected by God. God’s purpose had been fulfilled for the Messiah came
through the Jews. Jesus said to the leaders of Israel just before going to the cross to
die for the sins of His lost sheep “Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone
which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the
Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The
kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the
fruits thereof.” Matthew 21:42-43

Jesus went on to say to the Jews “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye
escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and
wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them
shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: That upon
you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of
righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between
the temple and the altar. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this
generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them
which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together,
even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold,
your house is left unto you desolate.” Matthew 23:33-38

The things that happened during Jesus’ time on earth as a man was what God had
shown to Daniel. The time had come for the fulfillment of that which was to occur
at the time of the end. God now turns to John and reveals to him what He was about
to do. John said “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book
written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel
proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the
seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able
to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was
found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the
elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of
David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
Revelation 5:1-5

When no man was found in heaven or in earth who was able to open the book,
neither to look thereon, John began to weep, but one of the elders said “Weep not:
behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the
book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.” Revelation 5:5 The only one qualified
to take the book and open the seals was the Lion of the tribe of Judah, Jesus Christ
of Nazareth.

Despite all the efforts of the wicked one to prevent Jesus from fulfilling the purpose
of God, Jesus had prevailed and had won the victory. He had fulfilled all the
demands of the law that man was unable to do, He had faced every temptation that
any man can face and had overcome, He had died, but death could not hold Him.
Paul said everything “(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy
scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed
of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power,
according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:” Romans 1:2-
As the over comer Jesus stood as one worthy to take the book and open the seals.
He and He alone stands as the one through whom salvation comes. Peter said “This
is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of
the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12
As He opened the seals, that which God had determined was fulfilled. The nation
of Israel was left desolate and the kingdom was given to the church. Judgment came
on Israel for her rejection of Jesus. John had said “He came unto his own, and his
own received him not.” John 1:11 Jesus said to the young church “Fear not, little
flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12:32
The old heaven and earth of Israel passed away and the New heaven and earth called
the bride, the Lamb’s wife was established. It is through this new Jerusalem that
God works and carries on His work in the world today. Paul said “Unto him be
glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
Ephesians 3:21

Jesus is now working through His church to bring those given to Him by the Father
to salvation. His kingdom is like the mustard seed and is growing day by day and
through her ministry He is glorified. There is no other, the Lion of the tribe of Judah
has prevailed.
